If a positive user experience is the best possible outcome for your environmental design project, one with long-term benefits for the bottom line, what does it take to ensure one? Part of your promise to your customer is to support good decision making, to reduce stress and to make him or her feel welcome in your space. If you're lucky, they will feel engaged and maybe even inspired by your environment.

Bringing your environmental graphics design partner on board during your planning phase will help you achieve a seamless user experience. This valuable partner represents the crossroads of branding, usability, and content and owns the first impression of your project as much as the architect, the owner and the service team. As steel beams rise from the ground and interior designers circle with options for colors, textures and lighting, you've got a lot to think about. Giving EGD a seat at the table from the beginning ensures you don't overlook an opportunity to incorporate the landmarks, architecturally inspired wayfinding devices and spaces for information that add to the aesthetic of your project and ultimately, the positive experience of your users.

You know the old saying... "you never get a second chance to make a first impression".

[caption id="attachment_1532" align="aligncenter" width="540" caption="Second Ave before and during set up"][/caption]

We talked to the team from RPA (http://www.rpa.com/) who were filming the event as a commercial to promote a new small business service for Intuit. This is their third event for Intuit; the first was dog grooming in New York’s Central Park and haircuts in Austin, Texas was the second. Those sound like fun, too.

[caption id="attachment_1534" align="aligncenter" width="600" caption="Intuit truck and film crew"][/caption]

The event had a tight window between morning and afternoon rush hours and dozens of team members were there to set up the course, lay down the ‘turf’, and film the scene.

[caption id="attachment_1535" align="aligncenter" width="600" caption="Building the course"][/caption]

With TV helicopters flying overhead and transit buses whizzing past, volunteers queued up to the tee to take their swings. A variety of props served as holes and were placed between the golfers and the large fork lifts holding up the netting that formed the driving range.

On Tuesday, a driving range appeared in the heart of Seattle on busy Second Avenue. Our office faces Second, so of course, we stepped outside to watch.

[caption id="attachment_1536" align="aligncenter" width="600" caption="Props and the course"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_1537" align="aligncenter" width="540" caption="The pros"][/caption]

Two golf pros were on hand for lessons. Mike took a lesson from one pro and now his swing looks much better. The cost? .00 and you paid by credit card with, you guessed it, the new Intuit device.

[caption id="attachment_1538" align="aligncenter" width="423" caption="Mike's improved swing"][/caption]

If you consider traffic patterns, building architecture, landscaping and content that is presented sequentially in digestible modules, they may. But while a good exhibit informs, a great exhibit design tells a more immersive story. At Michael Courtney Design, we believe a great exhibit becomes a natural part of the built environment, interacting with its audience in a way that is educational, motivating and ultimately inspiring.

Did you know that Humboldt penguins are an endangered species? That the corporation you are visiting was built on the values of patience, courage and respect? That generous donors whose contributions have literally saved lives made this program possible? We do. And we can tell your story too.
